Has anyone any experience of using chains on a coupe with 225/45/17 tyres. My manual states that you can't fit chains on it but the dealer recommends a Rudmatic Disc at £350 (too expensive).

If the possibility of snow affecting my travel was serious I'd opt for a set of winter tyres rather than snow chains.

I live in the south east though and the weather here is hardly ever bad enough to justify spending anything on winterising the car - mind you, I do work from home so commuting in the snow isn't an issue :)

andy_k I only need them for a weeks skiing holiday in the Alps so don't want to spend too much.

Sounds to me like you just need some just in-case rather than as a regular so the best quality isn't critical. Snow chains won't be a big seller in the UK so it isn't surprising the dealer is of no use. Just tried google and found these guys almost instantly

£85 done.
I imagine there are loads of others out there too.

Thanks I'll try them, at that price it is cheaper than the hire option I was exploring. Just have to check that they are OK on the car I think that is the problem with some as there is insufficient clearance behind the wheel.

Hi Colin.
I have a set of Snow Chains for my W124 230TE I took them with me last year when travelling through europe to a german Ski resort. I never used them and got around fine, the thought of fitting them and the thought of the damage they could do if they become unattached didnt appeal to me one bit and my TE is only worth a grand (or less)
You are welcome to borrow mine if they fit and you feel brave enough to use them,

regards,

Terry.
