Hi all

I have been thinking of changing my 270cdi estate, its a Jan 03 on a 52 with nearly 90k on the clock. Had it 2 years now and apart from the alloys its just great, but I feel like a change.
Originally started looking at a more modern estate, but in last couple of weeks I'm drawn to either an E class or CLK about 2004, both with the 270 lump in. My current car gives great mpg, always over 40 except in Cambridge City centre! I do around 30 - 40k per annually.

Your recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated.

Tony

Do try the E class if you can go to it, that would be very different from what you have

An E is a step above from a C, in terms of trim and comfort. You won't see over 40mpg though.
Sure you can get them to 40+. Mine maxes out at 48mpg at a steady 50, but overall average is more like 34. (though I do have 245 tyres which don't help).
I love mine - what more can I say.

Thanks for that.
Majority of my miles is on Motorways with Cruise set to 75, so sounds as if it might still be economical.

Hi,
I went from a C saloon (c220 CDI - W203) to E270 CDI estate last year. I used to around 50 on the C wheres the E gives me around 41 on a run. I have seen it do 47 (driven at 60), however, my driving is more at the limit (70-80).Around town (depending on how cold it is), it will give me 30s, this winter I have seen it as low as 18-19 (around town).
We mainly changed the car due to the new addition to the family, it's amazing how many things you have to carry around when you have a little un!. The E estate is bigger and more practical (to us anyway) than a C estate, hence the E rather than a C. And it a lot better to look at (my opinion) :)
I would look for a later version (post 04) with nano paint, comand (plays MP3), parkatronic (its a big car) and leather. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

Pete

seems that if you get a decent run the ecomomy is still there then.

Hi Tony,
Yes, I would say so. As long as youre doing most of youre miles on the m'way AND stick to a reasonable speed, then you should see good figures. It still amazes me everytime though. 2685 CC, heavy car, still giving you 40's - I think is great!. you might also want to check out the 280, as these are mostly facelifted models. They are slo V6 rather than the 5 pot, I did try a 280 before I settled on the 270. Driving the 270 just felt right, so I bought it. AND it had more toys :)

Cheers

take it easy and 40-44 isn't a problem. Press on over the hills and maybe 38. I commute over the pennines every day touching 80+ a lot of the way. Queueing in and out of Leedsand Mcr, plus a bit of local running around and consistently see 600+ miles from the 80L tank.

Hi Jib
have been tempted! But trying to balance the heart against the budget and the practicality for my job. Once I started to look, it's amazing just what is out there at the moment.
Could be a long search as I enjoy the looking!

If you want economy and almost the same performance as the 270cdi, the facelifted 220cdi with 170hp and loads of torque is just the ticket.

Check the search engine on the MB website and you just might tbe surprised at how low some of the asking prices are -and you can haggle.

Over 2,000 changes were made on the facelift version -almost a new model some say.

Thanks Hawk

I have tried 2 or 3 facelift models and the revised 220 is quite a performer, but the "kid" in me loves that surge every now and then with the 270 lump.

But ecomomy might still win the day.

Is the 270cdi any faster than the newer 220cdi. I'd wager it isn't due to extra mass and no real power advantage. I'd guess the 220cdi may also be the more nimble car. You're probably more aware of the 270's "surge" as its noiser, but its a nicer sound you'll get in a 270cdi

Would an V6 car be in budget as these are very gutsy but they are not so good on fuel to the extent I might consider a petrol version priced several £1k less.

I didn't find much difference between the 270 and the revised 220, but hard to really get a feel on a test drive (and that's if I'm allowed one!). I asked an owner of the 280cdi about economy and he hadn't seen 40mpg yet, but to be fair he was only using it on local runs he said.
Brother in law is a taxi driver in Norway and says the E220cdi is the car for me. Not convinced....yet !

Forget the V6 cars, they'e great and all that but quite juicy and not really relevant for you.

The advantage of the facelift 220cdi is the power and economy with the facelifted car which has advantages (2000 of them) apparently over the pre facelifted car (1 advantage SBC). The 220cdi in the pre facelift is fine for me, but other say it is a bit gutless, and in high speed overtaking moves it can leave you wanting, but I used to have a 4.4i X5, but for most its fine. The 270cdi is nice, but its in the prefacelifted car and isn't as responsive as the 220cdi (5 pot diesels are notorius for this).

If its accoustic pleasure you're after then the 220cdi may not be the car for you, but then no diesel is and you're into the world of petrol engines.
