So what's a Cat G for car tax purposes?

Sorry if this is not the correct forum entry - engines - fuel - emissions - We've all heard today's budget highlights and are joyed to hear about Cat G 'fuel guzzlers' about to get the new 'top rate' car tax phased in.

What comes into this category - does it include my 30 MPG E300 that runs on zero carbon impact Veg oil - sorry, ignore the bit the veg oil as the government turns a blind eye to this fuel type...

PS - What peeves me off is my wife's 3 month old new model Corsa 1.4 with latest environmental controls in the engine bay only gets 35 MPG (albeit she does do very short journeys all the time, which is not ideal). The 5 MPG difference is deemed to "dreadfully selfish of me and uncaring to the environment" but it's nothing in the grand scheme of things!!

Hi,
Think you should be on the general motoring discussion, but not a problem.

To be in Band G:
- Car must be registered after 1st March 2001.
- Emissions >225g/km, which is in general roughly<33mpg official average MPG.

Mini Cooper S is in that bracket.

Before 1st March 2001 road tax is a flat rate based on capacity, currently about 180quid and going up fiver a year for next few years. Details on BBC web, full budget report.

As I read it, to be in band G, your car has to registered after April 2006. Is this correct?? If so I may be OK with my 2004 ML 270CDi.

That was how I read it as well.

Hopefully I'll still be OK with mine? (as sig file)

If anyone can manage to stay awake while reading the following link its the Budget press release! Its about half a meg for those with slow connections.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2007/pn-complete.pdf

Vehicle bands are on page 32 along with fuel duties and other such things.

I'm not complaining but I do think it odd that I can tax my 5, 5.6 and 6 litre cars for £180.00 while someone with a fairly avarage 2+ litre car registered after March 26th 2006 is soon to be paying £400.

I renewed my car tax (£195 so must be band F) on-line 2 days ago. Saved myself £10 by the looks of it. The on-line service thing is a good idea, no need to stand in a queue of old biddies collecting thier pension any more.

Like Neil renewed my tax disc at the end of Feb online. Saves all the hastle with bits of paper and new disc arrived by post 3 day later. Cost £190 for a 3 litre E280 petrol rated at 232gms/km. Must be the March 23rd 2006 start date that decides it.

I did mine online, only did half a year though at £96.25..

Had to wait about a week for it to come through, but didn't really fuss me.

There is nothing worse than a line of urine smelling old biddies and buddies discussing the price of carrots, cakes, shag and plug - on-line is the future :)

From an old bugger not yet reached the urine smelling stage, but still concerned about the increasing price of condoms!

I guess the argument is that as it wasn't retrospective (thankfully!), anyone buying such a car knew they were buying one in the special fleece'em band.

I have a problem finding the answer to this question. Thinking of PXing other halfs Saab 95 for a pajero/shogun diesel because of time spent on pretty rubbish road on farm to access the stables. The vehicle will be pre 2001 and I cannot find any info on what the road tax will be.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

TIA

It will end up as people with band f & G cars will be in an exclusive club for the well off, I really dont care how much my ML270 costs to tax, there is always a way to "recoup" the money from the thieving scumbags anyway.

Regarding the smell of urine in the post office que, you forget to mention the aroma of cabbage and TCP that accompanies it.

The online tax thing is great, done it twice now and got my disc back within 3 days, good service.
