Just bought a C320 2001 model and have noticed that when applying the hand break foot pedal that there is no clicking noise like on my previous 1999 C-class model.

In the old one I would get a serious of clicks when I pressed the pedal down and a loud thud noise when i release the hand break, but with the newer car the foot pedal totally noiseless and soft. Also the hand brake release is noiseless too. I pull the release and hear nothing.

Is this how its supposed to be? It has me a little concerned.

There should be clicks.
What happends is there is a little black plastic pin and ratchet which goes onto the pedal, these are very weak and are allways breaking. Very cheap from your mb dealer. Make sure you buy two pins as you are gaurateed to fit the first one the wrong way round, and the only way to change them is to break the pin again.

They are easy to fit just take a good look at it and you will work it out.

The clicking is purely so you know you are appling the parking brake with a audioable sound, it has no effect what so ever to the operation of the parking brake, so dont worry to much as its just one of those things you associate with a parking/hand brake so they make it click.

Yes, my old C Class 2001 broke it's plastic ratchet at about 30,000 miles. I was very concerned until I found out from the loacal MB dealer that it was cosmetic only. As it was a company car I continued without any clicks for another 30,000 miles.

Gents, I thank you for this good news. It had me a concerned for a while.

Its a nice idea giving the parking brake this clicking noise though. I will probably fix this myself.

Thanks again. Very helpful!
