What makes cars produce steam from the exhaust pipes?

Why do some cars produce more steam than others?

Does lots of steam indicate a problem?

They all produce the same volume of steam, as each gallon of burnt fuel produces a gallon of water. Ambient temperature, vehicle warm-up state etc., makes it more or less obvious at the tailpipe.

Cars produce what appears to be more 'steam' when the engine is cold. A lot of people don't understand that thrashing an engine from cold is a bad thing.

You have to laugh at the people that drive a 100 yards to pick up their Sunday paper. They probably think they are saving money on the cost of delivery...in reality they are heading for a new engine!
