The display no longer illuminates on the removable front panel of the Sony CDX-C580R single CD/radio fitted to my 1999 W208 CLK. All other functions work and the display can be seen to change as required when a strong light is shone on it, so it is purely the illumination of the LCDs which has gone. Connections have been cleaned.
From the way the fault dveloped I am convinced it is no more than a dry or broken joint which requires resoldering.
The problem is how to open the casing, with all visible screws (3) removed there is not the slightest give between the two halves suggesting that it is more than just the knobs holding it together. What am I missing?
