I own an E270Cdi Classic on a 53 plate, fitted with the MB standard radio/cd unit. I want to be able to play through this standard unit either a Sony Walkman Minidisc player or a Sony Walkman CD player. The Sony Walkman CD player can play MP3 CDs. I know of the small FM transmitters that plug into the lighter socket but have both read and been told that these often do not work properly.

I spoke the other day with a chap at the local Orpington Car Stereo shop and he said that the best way of playing either Walkman is via a cable running from the glovebox to the car aerial connection on the back of the radio. Cost: £90 (inc. VAT). Tune the radio to a specified FM frequency and off you go, so to speak. The volume control on the radio will work but everything else (stop, pause, etc.) must be controlled from the Walkman. I would welcome views on this. I've searched this site but found no discussion on the same point.

The device that you are referring to is called an RF modulator, a means of getting audio and video through a tuner.
The biggest problem is the sound quality loss as FM only only extends from 50hz to 15khz -3db and normal CD goes from 20hz to 20khz, so the sound will only ever be as good as the FM (flat)

I used to open the radio.s up and take a couple cables with phono sockets or 2.5mm jack from the ends of the volume control, they all run at 0db = 775mv.

...and they are illegal, I thought.

I have a JVC head unit that has a 'line in', I can simply plug in any device via the headphone socket.

If your head unit has an input for a multi disk changer, then it may be possible to use this in some way.

The Ipod FM Itrip is technically illegal in the UK. The RF modulators that fit inline to the Ae. conection are not as you are not broadcasting.
