apologies for mentioning fords on this site but i have a problem with my wifes mondeo and the mondeo website and haynes "manual" don't help at all. i'm trying to remove the starter motor which has to come out from underneath the car. trouble is there's something bolted to the front of the engine which i think is part of the a/c system and in the way. [nobody seems to know it exists].i think it's connected directly to the water jacket but does anyone know whether it's also connected [directly to the block i mean and not the hoses] to the a/c system. i.e. if i remove it and don't disconnect the rubber hoses will i only lose engine coolant and not refrigerant?
grateful for any help
pete

Pete, i can't help you, but if you register with honestjohn and go into the backroom technical questions side, you may get a good response.
There are a few fleet mechanics (as against technicians) who regularly post there, and will probably have come upon this problem.

Good luck with it anyway.

Hi Pivers ,I've changed a few of these starters and never had a problem ,the part you show is A/C but should not impede removing starter from below as mounting bolts are accessed from below .

starter

hi sigma
i hate to disagree but there is absolutely no way that the starter is accessible from the bottom with the a/c in the way. furthermore, assuming it was accessible it would still be a nightmare manoeuvering it out that way. i eventually got it from the top after removing the power steering and coolant pipes, the battery and tray and the large turbo pipe that runs alongside the engine block. sounds a lot but was no problem at all. i then simply moved the starter to the right and lifted it out [after unbolting it of course .]
as a matter of interest the motor was not full of swarf from the flywheel as predicted by mondeo site members but there was a coating of gunge on the spindle which must have been enough to stop it from working. cleaned it works fine.
one thing though. i left a coating of oil on the spindle and something tells me that i shouldn't have. i know the old fashioned starter motors had to be kept dry. perhaps someone can advise me regarding this.
cheers
pete
