Hi, All!

The pavements in our road are currently being tarmacked. Previously, I only had a microscopic stone chip on the bonnet of my blue/black 11 year old W124 E220, so I kept moving my car further up the road out of harm's way. It was ultimately a waste of time. The paintwork on my car was damaged by stones thrown up by an excavator near my car, and by the excavator driving past with overfllled bucketfuls of scalpings, etc, which inevitably fell out of the bucket in transit. The road alongside our cars is strewn with stones and debris. The workman admitted liability, and so I contacted the company's insurance dept. A very understanding guy called around and suggested that I send him a estimate for the damage. Well, as I live in Surrey, I visited the nearby Merc. Benz dealer at Hersham and asked them for a quote to repair the chips. Their rep. said that they although there are only about half a dozen chips on each side of the car, both sides would have to be resprayed and the rest of the car given an acrylic wash to blend the colour in with the respray. She quoted £3000! I don't think that this company would buy that, and I don't want to lose the original, superior finish.

Therefore, does anyone know of a decent company around Kingston in Surrey, that would repair the chips and do a really great job at a reasonable price? I read on the forum that the majority view is that the quality of the work provided by Chips Away leaves much to be desired so I will steer clear of them. My car has been lovingly cared for during all of its life, and deserves a great professional repair of the chips, but at a more reasonable price.

My fingers are crossed! Thanks in advance!

If the company has admitted liability then you are entitled to be put back in the same position as you were prior to them damaging your car. Therefore it matters not if they are unhappy with a £3K bill, what matters is that your car is repaired correctly. You could find another high quality bodyshop and ask them to quote so you can give them 2 options.

Thanks Blobcat!

I know that you are right, but isn't the modern water based finish inferior to the older technique? Secondly, does anyone know of a high quality bodyshop around Kingston?

Just be careful of the "betterment" clause

You are entitled to have the car put back to the condition it was in prior to the damage - but not better than it was so the ( their ) insurance company might try to get a contribution from you.

I'd give the car a good wash, polish with Autoglym or similar including the extra gloss protection coat so it looks pristine in case they want to re-inspect. If it looks pristine they have less room to argue.

I cant also see why they do not expect Mercedes to do the work - they made it ! - Epsecially if you have a full service history with Mercedes, if not then maybe you will have to accept an independant - in which case find out who your Merc Dealer uses !!

There is no reason why an 11 year old Mercedes cant look like a 2 year old car after all..

Good advice, David. Thanks! I will do just that, and hope that they play fair.
