Got a tinny vibration when pulling away from a standstill at low revs.

Goes away when there's no load on the engine and cruising.

What's the best option for this? Something that Kwik Fit can take care of, or something for the dealer/indie ?

Is there a nice, good value, aftermarket solution?

Dont take to kwik fit otherwise the'll say you need a full exhaust system no doubt robbing ba$$tard$ if you can have a look underneath and check for the heat shields as star says, what model do yo have?

Thank you for your replies.

Had an opportunity to look underneath it as the rear tyres were being changed. Gave it a good shaking and bashing with a rubber mallet and nothing obvious strikes me. The tyre chap said that one of the rear boxes sounds clogged. Not sure how he came to that conclusion, but I suspect he's more experienced than I am.

Where might the errant heat shields be? I am presuming near the manifold?

Back to PC Merc today, and after a much more thorough investigation, it's looking more like catalytic convertor issues. :(

The noise isn't unbearable, I shall live with it until it becomes worse, then look for replacement.

Does a complete manifold backwards replacement have to have the cats, or is it like the good old days when you could just have lots of stainless tubing and cherry bombs in there?

Non genuine exhausts are generally of poor quality.

I always recomend the real thing as they are better made, last longer and fit properly.

Hi there..

I had the same problem a knocking as accelerating, took it to MB the quoted £1000 to change the Cat not because it was faulty but because where it bolted to the engine had snapped but good old MB had to change the whole Cat.
I got it welded for £35

Hi, I recently changed the front pipe on my 124 (the resonator box was perforated) and replaced it with a pattern part. it took a bit of wrestling to get the 2 manifold pipes to align but went okay.

however it now rattles in much the same way you describe (little on acceleration, not annoying). I know its not loose because it passed the MOT but i think it could be due the construction. happy to live with it for now.

if it is your cat, it will rattle for a while then performance will fade away.

My engine management light came on the other day, so I popped into Merc Stratford hoping that they'd be able to get the error code off quickly. No such luck, wanted me to book it in for an hour, and charge me £120 for the priviledge.

So, I baulked slightly at that, and after I bought my shiney new key I ran down the road to PC Merc and 7.5 mins and £40 later it was all done. Error found (Failing catlicker as I suspected) and all faults cleared.

So now I'm trawling the www for genuine front pipes.
