South African Made C Class

I have a 2003 C 200K and have just noticed on the inner door sticker made in south africa. I thought they were built in Germany !

Is there any quality issue differences between German made / SA made?

Does it effect sell on prices classed as an import?

No I think all 203 saloons were made there.
Estates were made in Germany.

All Mercs in the UK are imports!
The sports coupé is made in Germany too, just the saloons are made in SA.

Was told by garage my c240 2001 saloon was built in Germany as were all v6

As far as I know all vehicles have the country of build on the vin data plate.

This is as i was told at local MB dealer was also told cars built in Germany are
better have not had to many problems in last 3yrs some small electrics issues
one new battery and recently a new ball joint, am enjoying car its a bit thirsty
and serviceing costs are quite steep but its nice to drive.

Nearly all Saloons are South African Made....

....as mentioned earlier on this forum, we ordered a new C Class 4 years ago, it was to be built in Sindelfingen, Germany. We got a call half way into the wait list to be told it would be built in South Africa! As our family has lived in SA for 10 years and started 2 Iron/Steel foundaries, we had a unique insight into the country. The immediate reaction to the information was surely it cannot be followed by rapid calls and arguments with the dealership. We couldnt cancel and were assured it would be of the same great German built quality....mmmm! Its not.....

nope. My C240 (V6) says South Africa. My last car was an Audi, built in Germany. There is just no comparrison I'm afraid....

Mine has WDB203 code and says made in Germany on door pillar

I'm sad to say, being ex SA myself,the build quality and attention to detail of SA built cars is not up to standard,my SA built Golf was a constant problem.
If you lived there you would understand why.

Now the Germans are building BMW 5 series in China, it comes without a spare wheel and there seems to be no quality control. Most chinese prefer German made cars. Soon Mercedes will be into a chinese joint venture, im dreading it

I`ve seen recently a news report saying that SA built Mercedes had better reliability that German built ones.

It all depends what they measured and how, I'm interested in longevity, I don't care if a car has half a dozen minor electrical bugs when delivered.

when delievered is one thing. Mine is 4 years old now and still problematic. Just search on my threads and you'll see what I mean.
