Can a 17" (or even a 16" ) skinny spare wheel be temporarily used in the event of a puncture when the other 3 normal wheels are 18"?
Any info out there?

Hello and welcome

Simple answer is, “probably” yes
You need to check the overall diameter is the same, temporary spare wheels usually have tyres with a larger sidewall so the overall diameter is the same as the normal wheels/ tyres.

Yes it can - I looked into this ages ago and all the info has since leaked out of my brain. Blobcats comment still applies however.

Wheel size should be the same across axles to make a vehicle roadworthy, but there is exemption, somewhere, for space savers when used for temporary purposes.
