My 2005 C230 V6 has done 53K miles and according to the service schedule is due new plugs between 50-60K miles. Is this an easy job on the new 2.5L V6? Are there 6 plugs as I seem to remember reading the old C240 had 12? What manufacturer should I use - Bosch or is there a Mercedes OEM?

Hi. Moosehead.

I think the V6 packs two plugs per cylinder. Easyway to tell is open the bonnet and have a look. Much faster than hopping on the computer and waiting for a reply. Looking will also reveal how hard it is to get past the plumbing. you will need to take off the charger coils. The head is alloy so overtightening the plugs could cause serious damage.... this part and crossthreading a plug are the two steps that always cause a little concern to the uninitiated.

I use the jap (Whale killers) NGK plugs . Allegedly they are supposed to be better than the Bosch, at least this is the common theory here in Aus. although there is no real way of testing the story. The Bosch are fine and i suspect the previous member's reference to merc plugs is synonimous with the same product.

If You have some good basic tools I would be inclined to have a go at it provided you proceed slowly and carefully. you will learn alot more about your car than taking it to a mechanic who will charge you heaps for what is normally a very simple operation

Your car has 12 plugs and they are not the kind of plug found at any shop either, mercedes charge about £100 just for the plugs and it takes about 2 hours to replace them.

To not damage the coil packs,, lever the caps off over the rocker cover with an open ended spanner

Officially it's 60k, in reality they'll probably happily last 70-80k and in my experience, the leads won't survive the experience so you may as well budget for a set of those too. If she's running well, leave it alone for now.

Many thanks TV. Do you know if they are conventional plugs and easy to change?
