Hi,
I'm having the car serviced next week. It is a 98'model with 64K miles and has the 119.981 engine.

As far as I can see from the service record it has only had the plugs changed once before so it will probably benefit from new ones. The mercedes standard plug is a ''3322'' at about 2 pounds + VAT.

Any views on benefit of fitting ''higher quality'' plugs - these seem to be anything up to 5-6 pounds each. Do they give any better fuel consumption or smoother running, or is it all a big con?

Is the plug change difficult to do in terms of what you have to take off to get at them? I guess I could save a bit of the service cost by doing it myself but if it is tricky I may as just let the garage do it as part of the service.

Thanks,

Dave

personally dont think there is much of a difference in the plugs, but thats just me, plug swap takes about half an hour tops, remove the air box, remove the cover plates on the tops of the cylinder rocker covers.
remove the coil packs then plugs.

The recommended plugs for use with LPG-fuelled engines retail for about £8 each. They claim to provide better fuel economy and performance, as well as lasting longer. As these were fitted as part of the recent conversion, I have never run my car on 'standard' plugs, so I am unable to make a comparison.

However, when It comes to replace them I will certainly have to think whether 6 x £8 is value for money.

If you know the plugs you're after then visit.

Unbeatable prices and next day delivery when I used them for my bike. NGK Iridium plugs for £5.50 + vat. Much cheapness and the real deal.

Edit: They do Glow plugs also.

Thanks for the web site.

I have checked and BKR6EIX (designed for LPG-fuelled engines) are indeed 'only' £5.50 each. Still, a great improvement on the £8+ price I had seen elsewhere.

Cheers

Did the plug swop this weekend

Thanks to jib, followed your advice and did the job myself. It was quite simple as you said, but you must have done the job a good many times to be able to do it in 30 minutes! Took me around 1 1/2 hours, but the plugs were stuck in pretty tight and they definitely needed changing.

In case anybody is interested I decided to buy the Bosch platinum plugs. They were about 5 pounds each from GSF so maybe a bit of an extravagance? But if they do last longer then they are worth it just to save doing the job as frequently.
