I took my 55 AMG for an MOT & Service this week (it failed the MOT for two cracked front springs - whatever they are!!).

The service department called me today and asked if it was ok to replace the spark plugs (at a cost of £338 for 16 of them!!). Their justification was that they recommend replacing all the spark plugs every four years.

The car has done only 61000 but they said it is more the "time" that has elapsed rather than the number of miles.

I asked what the risk was if i didnt change them and was horrified to hear them tell me it could start misfiring and then do damage to the head gasket. I feel as if i have no choice but to fork out another £338 but am i just being taken for a ride????

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

plugs at 61K

Hi

You say the car has only done 61000 on the original plugs most cars have plugs every 10000 so you are well in profit, they are due at 4 years or 50k so you are actualy overdue. In profit agian. Yes the risk is missfire but consequential damage is Kats not head gasket.

Who has an AMG 55 and maons about spark plugs at 61000 miles ?????

At least do a bit of research about spark plug life before moaning it must be the massive .00445 pence per mile that is breaking your heart

Hi Piestore, the type of person who moans about spark plugs is someone who buys a clk 55 amg 6 weeks before it appears in the glassess guide for the first time ever and loses £8,000 in 5 months.

The person (me) is also expecting twins in a few months and is looking to sell the vehicle and is depressed enough about the resale value without throwing another £350 down the drain.

Hope that helps you to understand!!

I had the same 'recommendation' on my E at the last service (48k/ 5 years) - just 12 plugs and £250 in my case. The truth is that the recommendation is simply that (5yrs / 60k I believe). Plugs can last far longer depending on usage and luck or can fail earlier. I refused as the car is running better than ever at the moment so if it aint broke, why fix it. With 2 plugs per cylinder, you will know about a misfire well before it can do any damage (idle will be slightly lumpy but fuel the will still ignite from the other plug so the cat will be safe). When it goes lumpy I'll pop some plugs in. In the mean time I have that nice feeling of getting something for nothing! Especially if you are selling the car, I wouldn't bother until you need to. Let the next buyer fork out as they will get the benefit.
