I'm about to undertake some under the bonnet work on my R230 and wanted to change the plugs, it a 5.4 M273 engine.
Any brands/types best avoided by experiance here ??

I always buy NGK.
Failing that Denso.

I was always a fan of Denso for big gas engines, not quite the same but a good product lol

My local Mercedes supplied NGK from the parts counter, not quite as cheap as ecp, but only a few pounds more and with an MB receipt for your paperwork. 12 months warranty on their parts aswell.

Back in the day, I used to like Bosch and NGK. Didn't care much for Champion.

Only ever had one plug fail in 54 years driving, it was a Champion. Also like NGK.
Ditto. Mine was in my rally mini. The centre electrode came loose and dropped down to touch the earth electrode. Pull the plug out, turn it upside down to inspect it and it fell back again and all looked normal. Took a while to figure that one out!

Saw a YouTube about the evolution of spark plugs... Seems the G in KLG, (remember them?) stood for Guinness.

Kenelm Edward Lee Guinness was a member of the Guinness family, a racing driver and automotive engineer.

Its staggering the variety available, especially in the US. Its also staggering the amount being reported as fake even though sold through reputable vendors. I heard of a mainstream UK motor factors selling fakes and they were totally anaware.
