Hi all,

My 89 230te recently became a bit rough on the idle and a little hesitant when starting.
It went in to the garage 'down the road' for a few checks.
They changed the distributer cap and plugs but said they thought that the ht leads needed replacing as they could be cracking up.
The cost was a little out of my league that far from payday and I went away to think about it! :?
My brother in law said why not change the plugs for these new fangled 'Bosch super four plugs'. He had stuck them in his van when it was running like a dog and couldnt rate them enough!

Now I cant recommend them enough!
The old girl now runs sweeter than she ever has, smoother and with a little more urgency then before, cant tell the difference on the mpg front though.

Anyway £20 well spent I thought, has anybody else got any decent plugs they like or cheap mods that made a real difference?

p.s.I dont work for Bosch by the way :!:

I always have used Bosch H7 DCO on my 230E W124 auto. Europarts do them for £1.47p +vat. At that price I replace them every 12, 000 miles and have never had any problems. Starting is good and pulling very smooth. I usually put a bottle of injection cleaner in once a year and 2 tankfulls before I change the plugs. So far everything is fine, with 22-24 mpg in stop/start London, and 31 on a run.

good to hear shes running well again  just like every merc should!! A few things ive done that improved performance were:

change the air filter....although i only brought a new OEM filter it did improve responsivenes. I guess this depends on how clogged the old one was.

I agree with MW about the injector cleaner. For the small price it can make all the difference when you want to squeeze that extra bit of Omph out of the merc.

Check general things like the ignition timeing, this can change how your car accelerate quite a bit.

Thats all I can really think of.

cheers
