Speaker Install

I was fitting replacement speakers on the rear shelf in my 124 when I found that the new speakers sit deeper that the old ones. Anyway I find that I was able to get one to sit flush in the drop in hole but the other doesn'T. I don't know why? Furthermore when I looked in the boot I notice that there is a metal tray/platform under where the the speakers sit. This platform has a large hole underneath the general area where each speaker would sit.

Is the bottom of the speaker supposed to fit through the holes?
