What upgrades are available for a 124 coupe sound quality more than loudness is a higher priority.

Upgrade considerations

Upgrade considerations to include size of speaker which hence will amount to a bolt on upgrade without needing fabrication

Do you have the size of the speaker, measured across the frame, edge to edge,is it square in that car, I hated mine but never got around to changing them.

The dash speakers are a non-standard size - 12 cm IIRC. Mac Audio and Rainbow make drop-in replacements and at least one type of Blaupunkt version is available from the dealer for about £15 each

From my experience I'd say fit the smoothest-sounding front speakers you can, roll some of the bass out of them using an active crossover (your head unit may have this) and use a proper bass box in the boot to cover the low end. It's physically impossible to get sufficient bass out of the front speakers to keep up with the mid & treble you need to overcome road noise & listen to music with some dynamic range

It's possible to use smaller 10 cm speakers in the dash but this exacerbates the lack of bass. You can go bigger but you need to grind away some of a panel join under the screen. That's actually not a big deal - there's plenty of meat in it and you only need to lose a couple of mm. Mounting the speakers properly will be a challenge due to the windscreen being exactly where your drill / dremel / screwdriver needs to be to do the job

There's a fair amount of other info on the forums - do a search for Rainbow and Mac Audio and see what you turn up
