Specs Cameras Proposal?

I'm hearing rumours at work about plans to put Specs speeding/number plate cameras on the Motorway network with cameras at every entry and exit slip roads, including rest stops. The goal is to measure average speed for all motorway journeys and, allegedly, reduce bottlenecks by slowing us all down. Apparently it's way cheaper than putting GPS in all the cars to track where we're at and gets most of the desired result. No reason to stop at Motorways either.

Anyone else picked up anything on this? There's one road in Scotland, A77, where they're used most of the length of the road at all times. Apart from that I've only see them in use on the M25 at long motorway roadworks.

Hmm! I can see the number plate thefts rising even faster...!

Cheers!
John

maybe they'll see sense and also put in speed bumps, traffic lights and 20mph traffic claming zones too? Then we can make the safest roads on the planet nice and dangerous.

If they start doing that, they'd better reduce the price of suspension part's ect as you'll go through everything from ball joint's to full shock's alot quicker.

I thought I'd never say this but, as a result of speed bumps , I'm actually considering a large 4 x 4. My daily journeys include what must be dozens of steep bumps and a few miles of badly pockmarked road. I borrowed a LR Discovery 3 recently and it made the journey a lot less, well, bumpy. It had 7 seats, masses of load space and its footprint is pretty much the same as my E240 estate. For my purposes its actually a direct competitor to the E class. As aV8 its fuel consumption was non too good and I guess its emissions aren't too great either.

I wonder how many other people now drive large 4 x 4s because of these 'calming' measures?

The original posting about the viability of a specs network for total motorway cover is a distinct possibility. The Information processing capability and infrastucture is certainly feasible and avoids problems with GPS. As is the location of individuals from their cellphone emmissions.
I was going to add that the use of predator drones by chief constables was too far fetched, but now I'm not so sure about this new highways agency!

Re speedbumps: I recommend an old Range Rover!

You could always live in a place like where I live where we do not have them,
then you could keep the MB.

Iv'e been thinking about these for a while now, even before I got the Merc, apart from them the general state of the roads which is a disgrace and I now quite understand why people have them.

I drove my mate's Hi Lux a while ago and as you stated above....it make perfect sense!
