What do you make of the one that came this morning.

Hi M

New "undercover" Speed Cameras which were introduced a few

weeks ago on the A12 are going 'live' on Monday.

We have had a tip-off from the BTST Locator update team that

small 'specs' cameras have been sited both north and south

of the Blackwall tunnel on the A12 in London.

The cameras have been sited in a deliberate speeding hotspot

(because the limit reduces to 30 very suddenly without any

advance warning) and the fine has been raised from the usual 60

pounds, to 100 POUNDS per offence.

But here is the really unusual thing...

They have NOT installed signs warning drivers of this speed

trap.

Why?

Because they are not be going to be hitting drivers with a

licence endorsement as you would usually expect...

...they are just going to take our hard earned cash instead!

This is just the latest case of blatant profiteering from the

countries "safety camera" partnerships.

Our information tells us that these new cameras are going 'live'

from Monday (12th February).

The speed limit for the tunnel is 30 mph northbound and 40 mph

southbound.

If you already own a BTST Locator, then I strongly suggest you

update it NOW before the cameras go live.

If not, then you can grab your own Locator at:

All the best,

Adam Blair

I got £60 fine and three points last June at a spot near Ipswich, simliar circumstances, 70mph dual carriageway, suddenly dropping to 30mph 300 yards before a 5 exit traffic roundabout, but it was a temporary measure with signs posted very very poorly, and you couldn't see them anyway cos of the amount of HGVs and spray, as it was pi*sing down.

My car is an 02 220 with comand, is a disk available giving camera positions as well as usual sat nav stuff?

No camaras shown on Command, the thing to do is to have road angel or the like on the dash. there is another thread running right now on this.

Not sure if this is correct. For a camera speeding you normally get a fixed penalty, which is just that, fixed, and included the points. I don't know of any other speeding offences that don't carry any points, unless, of course, you're aquitted...

Also, I'm not sure there's such a things as "Undercover" cameras. Grey ones had to be made yellow and reflective a while back because of this.

They are undercover in North Wales, dark blue 'arrive alive' transit vans hiding behind lorry trailers.

Just as an aside to this topic, I have always been bugged by the built in inacuracy of most speedo's. As a commercial driver in the current enforcement climate I do like to know exactly how fast I am travelling. By checking against measured distances and 2 gps units I have found that my van and most other cars read around 3-4mph optimisticly. While in mercedes this week I asked if this could be altered with STAR as it was electronic from the ABS sensors rather than the traditional cable drive. There answer was, as expected, that it was indeed an option in the STAR preferences. The sting was a £65 charge to plug in the computer!!!

The only thing I can guess is that this is nothing to do with the flith. It is a council trying it on as they do with parking tickets, that's why they can't give points.

It'd be interesting to challenge one of these 'fines'...

On the basis that the Speedometer in the vehicle reads faster than you're actually going, it makes being caught speeding even worse, as if you were, say caught doing 38 in a 30, liklihood is that your speedo would read at least 40. My speedo says 80 when the Sat Nav says I'm around 75 or so.

My speedo and cruise control speeds don't match: if I put the cruise control on when the needle is at 70mph, the digital display reads 67mph for a few seconds.

Is this normal, and if so which is more accurate? I tend to trust the needle.

The Satnav will most likely be more accurate than the speedo. Speedos can over read by up to 10% but cannot under read. Most do as it makes you think our going faster. Mine over reads by 2.5mph

I sometimes visit a company called Corus (ex British Steel) in Llanwern, South Wales. As you drive through their site there's a long straight road with a digital speed check system in place with a 30MPH limit and it shows you you're speed. I have calibrated (checked) my speedo & computer reading, using thier reading which was 30, computer reading was 30 and the speedo reading was approx..32mph. So this tells me that there is error in the speedo + 2mph.

Presumably the cruise control doesn't depend on the satnav though, since cruise is standard and satnav is an option! I don't even know how to get Comand to tell me my current speed.

I don't have command I was thinking of aftermarket satnav or road angel type devices. I can pull up a digital speedo by pressing the top left button on the steering wheel once. Although not all MB's have that option.

Not the old 'A12 Blackwall Tunnel - hidden cameras' alert again, this is a load of old tosh, it rears it's ugly head every few months, just like a lot of the urban myth e-mails, the only thing that has been installed in the southbound bore is a variable speed limit, it's usually a 40mph limit, but at busier times, it's sometimes reduced to 30mph.

So this tells me that there is error in the speedo + 2mph.

This is normal - and a "feature" with all speedos. Some cars earlier came with warnings that the speedo was 10% inaccurate (roughly). As a result, you will notice that upto about 40 (true) your speedo will read roughly +2, upto about 60ish, it will be +3, so on etc. at 70 it is +4 to +5 depending on your setup, and this is true for the needle as well as the digital readout.

Reason being that in the earlier speedos, the needle couldnt move as fast as the speed pickup so a leeway was built in to prevent lawsuits saying - speedo said I was doing 30, how could I be clocked at 35 etc. Similar logic (to some extent) applies to braking when the speed of ur car is slowing down at a rate much faster than the speedo etc.

You will always notice that a satnav based speedo (like a tomtom etc.) is off from your dash. The dash speedo in the merc is NOT Linked to COMAND, though the COMAND system does tend to read the speed when it loses signal and use that to determine how far you have moved etc. With Tomtom etc. based thingys they assume ur still at the speed when they lost signal, which is why there might be an adjustment when they regain signal - which is quite annoying!
