I saw an ad on ebay describing the above. Just for a laugh, I purchased it (It was £2!) It was basically 2 pages telling you to do the following:

open drivers door, turn key to on position (not start) push accelerator to the floor for 5 seconds keep pressed, turn key back to off release accelerator and then leave for 2 minutes with key still in ignition.

Apparently, that will improve performance, acceleration and MPG (YEAH RIGHT!!!)

Question is, does this operation just reset the ECU or something similar? Can't say I noticed any difference, but just wondered?

Just to update anyone interested, my first experience of MB (CLK 320) is going really well, loving every minute :D

I think that just resets the gearbox

There is no such thing as re setting the gear box ECU it is linked to the engine ECU. Gearbox faults and codes are key reset that's all, so everytime you start it its re sets , you can sit the all day pushing all you like, nothing will happen.

I have seen the odd thread on this myself. Some users, noticably americans, swear by this technique.

I believe some of the older models had some gearbox ECU! I dont know, most tellingly, No MB mechanics, technicians and so on have heard of it.

Mind you, if you give it a go and it works, no harm done, and if it doesnt, what have you lost. 2 mins of your time.

So best thing is, give it a go and see. then report back.

Lots of threads on benzworld say this method resets the learnt behaviour on the auto gearbox. Because we all drive in traffic a lot, gearbox changes up earlier than performance alone would dictate. So reset via this method and lots of postings in the US claim a real gain in performance. No idea if it works, but that is what the US threads were saying.

Here are some links and a couple of quotes: -

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/gen...2116-gas-pedal-reset.html?highlight=reset+ECU

1) Turn key to ON position

2) Fully press gas pedal for about 10 seconds

3) Release gas pedal and turn key to OFF, but leave the key in

4) After a few minutes take the key out and you're finished

Press the gas pedal AFTER you turn the key to the on position.

BTW, if you want the threads, try "tranny reset," "adaptive tranny reset," or "ecu reset."

Again I stress this is what others are saying. I have no idea if any of it makes sense. If anyone tries it, let us know the results -0-60 in 4.6secs???:D

But the whole point is they do a reset just by turning the key to 2. So you drive off down the road in your reset set gearbox, the first thing you overtake with kickdown, or you are driving quickly and then settle down you are back to square one. The ECU is linked to the Engine ECU, there is only 1 memory line, and that is very short term, so short that if you were in a hurry on a B road, overtaking lots of cars, as soon as you back off in a 30 limit zone, the car settles down immediately or if you hit the motorway the car drops into top, at the corrct MPH/RPM time.
It could not function any other way.
On cars that I have tesed, where the owner thought that it was missing a gear,I have done the acceleration test and the kick down test and the results are identical against the chart for that car.and these test use the box to the full.

If anyone with a 722.6 gear box on, does not believe me, let me have the vin,and I will do you a print out of the gear changing chart for that car.

Interesting that there is no one on the market offering to re chip the ECU.

i think this operation resets the what the g/box has "learnt" about the drivers driving - style, ie how heavy footed they are, or not.

it probably will work - according to the claims from people who have used it (generally claimed in the US), but obviosly it will soon revert once the system has learnt your driving style again!

2 steps forward, 2 steps back !

Hawk,
I think the word here is 'Placebo'.
Yes they do learn, but they adapt almost instantly and also take incline and temperature into account. So, yes it will reset, but so will restarting the car, or just flooring it. I tend to find that the adaptive settings last for 1-2 gear changes max. It's rarely out of step with what you want it to do beyond that.
