I am wanting to do an oil change on my ML. The only problem I am having at the moment is that I can't get the splash guard off. The screws just keep turning, so I put a bit of force behind the plastic washer and then tried to unsrew. Low & behold I broke one into 3 or 4 bits. I don't want to carry on having a smashing time. Does anyone know the best way to remove these & where is the best place to get replacement retaining screw/washers ??

Cheers,
Mark

Just fix the guard back on with cable ties.
(Actually I believe this isn't really a 'splash guard' as I used to call it myself, but is there to enhance the aerodynamics - just a small point).

The original fitting are in stock at all MB dealers, very cheap to purchase.

I'm obviously a lazy b-gger Malcolm! :)
Tom, there are times when the trip to the dealer is not worth it, for me it means a 50 mile round trip. Its a shame that you can chenge the filter without crawling under the car, but you have to get this cover off to drain the oil, You are far from lazy:D

They are actually sound-proofing panels according to Mercedes.........

The panel fixings work on the same principle of a screw and rawlplug and are re-usable if removed as below..

To remove the fixings you have to gently unscrew the plastic philips head anticlockwise WITHOUT ANY FORCE PUSHING AGAINST THE SCREW until there is just enough of a gap that you can get a thin screwdriver blade underneath the head to prise the screw completely out....the body of the fixing then just pulls out.............to refit, push the body into position and then push the screw all the way into the hole with your thumb.

That did the trick - Cheers panason1c. I much prefer the non-destructive approach.
