Hi All

Wondering if anyone can help please. Do the back seats on the W203 (2001)fold down to increase the boot space? Ive seen some cars advertised with split-folding seats as an extra therefore im assuming that this is not a standard feature. Am i correct?

Cheers

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I'm 99% sure it's an option, although I have an estate which, of course, has split folding seats as standard. I think it would be useful too, I used to have a 406 saloon and the folding seats came in handy on many occaisions. They fold in pretty well all mass-market saloons, but not in any? of the 'premium' brands.

I bought my car from MB Direct and they listed some things as options that were in fact standard, including air conditioning (and it's the basic system, not the upgraded one)!

split rear seats

The wife has had a 2001 c200 w203 coupe from new and it has split rear seats, They came as a standard fitting,The rear seats lift and the backs drop giving a good size platform.

On the W203 saloon the split/folding rear seats come only as a factory fitted (extra-cost) option.

To check if this option is installed, open the boot and look at the underside edge of the parcel shelf.

If the car has split/folding rear seats fitted, there will be a red lever at each side. To drop the right or left part of the seat back, you pull the appropriate handle. This releases the selected section of the seat back and a red indicator flag pops up on the parcel shelf to show that the latch has been released.

You can then drop the seat back section down.

When you subsequently restore the seat back section to the vertical position the latch engages and the indicator flag drops back down into its recess.

Surely these are just an indication that the seats are unlatched. At least they were on my 203.

Earlier post by Alan Colvin has it right.

Yes the do show the seat backs are unlatched but when in the latched position, you can push to unlatch the seatback from the passenger compartment.

OK, but are they not flush with the panel at the back of the seats when they are latched and only rise when the seat is released by the handles in the boot? We are talking about the same indicators? Surely the ability to open them from inside the car compromises the security of the boot in the event of a break-in?

Sorry but not had my W203 since 2010, so memory on exactly how the release catches work is a bit faded. I seem to remember that you could open the seat back from the passenger compartment and "lock" them from inside the boot but I can't be 100% sure.

I would see if someone on the forum still running one (they are very good cars) - or indeed with a sharper memory, if they can confirm?

Regards
Phil
