I had a recall letter for my car E320 Sport, Mercedes garage completed the work and phoned me to say I needed two new tyres on the front which was going to cost me £380. I asked to see the tyres as there was nothing wrong with the treads and I have only done 5k on them since I had it, these front tyres were not new. My car was on the ramp and I saw splits in the inside of each tyre, they could of blown at any time.
I thought it was good skills for them to even look under the car let alone check the tyres.
Anyway as I had taken out insurance for tyres, body work and interior when I bought the car it I had it done free, All it cost me was £20 to re-insure the tyres etc. And I thought I was being tucked up when I finally opted for the insurance. So, CHECK YOUR TYRES and well done Mercedes of Kidlington.
I will feel safer when driving up to Scotland on Sunday fro a few days.:D

Any car now going into a mb workshop gets a free heath check, even if its in for a bulb! goes up on the ramp and a good looking over, sounds like this saved you a blow out!!!

Is'nt this kind of thing caused by putting your wheels either side of speed hummocks(??) to try to minimise suspension problems some of these things can cause?Apparently this does cause very premature wear of the inside edges of tyres.

That was quick,Malcolm.Glad that hummocks was a recogniseable term.Yes they do have tapered ends, but this will in some cases cause sidewall scuff damage.A friend of mine was horrified recently to see this kind of damage on his sub 10k mile tyres when he put his car on the ramp-an extremely experienced ,very smooth professional driverBTW.He admitted to straddling these things.Since putting new tyres on,he has now modified his habit. Will let you know the result.

I've never heard of that (other than insurance that some tyre places offer, but they reduce the payout dramatically with wear on the tyres).
Is it something the dealer offered at purchase?

that must of been what happened to mine, My car went in for a few jobs, my right rear was given an amber, I went to ATS they told me it had plenty of tread come back in a couple of months, two days later it went, split down the inside edge.

it still had quite a bit of tread on

Yes it was, and I think it was well worth it now.:)
