I was told hat I may have a little crack on my off/drive/rear spring coil. Is it safe to wait for warning noises? What kind of damage can it do if breaks while I drive???

I had a rear spring break on my CLK a few weeks ago. All I heard was a huge bang. I couldn't tell any difference driving and did so for several days.

If you know it is cracked then why wait to see. It is not possible to foresee what it would do. My wifes 01 C180 seemed prone to rear springs, needing 2 sets in just 37,000 miles (I suggest you always change the pair even if only one is damaged). First was indicated by an intermittent rattle, the second announced itself when a lump fell out whilst driving, and clattered against the bottom of the car with no apparent damage, but maybe we were lucky.
Pity the cats eye that wrecked the bottom engine bay cover and bust a pressure switch on the air con condenser didnt do the same.

Its always the end bit that breaks off, and it will fail the MOT as they look for this.

It reminds me of a lady in Tesco complaining that the top biscuit was always broken in the packets and she said why do not they leave the top one off or out of the packet :???:

I was thinking this on the spring and that little bit about 4" long

Now I can hear it

I've been driving the C180 2 years, no noise and no complains. Took to Service and MOT and they failed it 2 days ago. Today driving to supermarket and the clunking noise appeared. Unbelievable!!! I don't want to sound mean but I'm worried if the garage did this to me. Can this be done?

PS: I had lots of bad traumatic experiences with my last BMW and Sidcup dealer.

Good news - MB agree a "goodwill" repair

For the last couple of days my CLK’s been in the main dealer having its (four year) big service and MOT.
In addition, I needed a new back spring as one had snapped and I could hear a “boing” sound when going over speed bumps.
They phoned me yesterday with a price for this extra work – insisting that both side must be replaced - rightly, in my opinion.
I asked about the possibly of a “goodwill” from Mercedes Benz toward the cost. The chap said he’d contact them and see what they say.
Anyway, this morning I received a phone call with some excellent news – Yes, Mercedes Benz will pay for all the spring work (both sides).:)
This is much better than was expecting – thinking, at best, that I’d have to pay for the unbroken side myself.
I’m delighted. The work is being done this afternoon and, hopefully, it’ll be ready tonight.
