Until I take the plunge and get my SL55, I'm going to improve my SL320 by fitting a Sprintbooster. In the bumph on the website it says they are very easy to fit, but I'm wondering how easy it really is.

Has anyone had experience of doing this?

Is it within MY capabilities?

Its plug and play. about 10 mins on your car, they do make the cars more exicitng to drive

It may be worthwhile trying a throttlebody reset beforehand.

I was thinking about fitting one of these to my C320 but after seeing a mb specialist he suggested not to as he thought they were a waste of time and money! he suggested a remap and k&n filter upgrades would be much better, i wanted to do all three but he said i'd be wasting my money with the sprintbooster

Remap is a reprogramming of the ecu and is like overclocking a cpu on a computer ie changing the settings so that the performance is outside of the manufacturers tolerances. The result, apart from performance normally outside your budget, is that everything is stressed a little bit more than normal and therfore cannot be expected to perform to type. K&N make racing air filters and fitting these can improve the aspiration of the engine whilst still managing to keep out unwanted debris.

The throttle body is electronic and adapts to your driving style. So it may start out with a linear relationship - i.e a small press of the pedal equates to a large opening of the throttle, but after a while it takes a big press of the pedal to achieve the same thing. A reset returns it to factory settings and then it starts to learn again.

A Sprintbooster basically maxes out the signal from the pedal so that you always get a large throttle opening for a small amount of pedal travel.

Reset Procedure:

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.

2. Turn the key to the on (not start) position, the position just before the starter turns over.

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

5. Wait 2 mins for a full alignment.

6. Drive the car as you always do.

Sorry but no, its needs more than just having the ability to hoover & burn lasagne to fit it.

You might need a 12 year old chav with their own hammer (or a stolen one) to do it for you.

That's why I just had to ask. I wouldn't want to scorch it in the frying pan or get it wet in the washing machine.

I though thats why one had ones butler, to thrash when things go wrong.

Have you though that if your car goes any faster the mess it would make of your hair might not be cost effictive.

Is your car a smaller engine don then?

Looks like a 2.8 (not that i know bugger all but i see alot in 2.8)

Ive no idea what your car is, an SL?

I fitted one of these to my BMW a few weeks back after reading a load of hype but have since removed it. A load of overpriced tosh IMO. It'll be on a well known internet auction site near you soon.

I found the throttle response very twitchy and difficult to control at slower speeds like town driving. It was either on or off, very hard to modulate. Over all the car wasn't really any faster but then it's a twin turbo and doesn't really suffer from any lag already. The current Mrs roadhog didn't notice any difference so I binned it.

The throttle reset I understand to be just a return to the factory settings until the ECU 'learns' your driving style again. Worth doing every now and then, it does appear as though you're driving a different car for a while.

Save yourself the money and treat your 55 to an extra tank full or have a meal out!

Should you go ahead with it (and you would be the first to listen to any advice from me), fitting is easy DIY. It simply plugs in between your throttle pedal and it's connector. I have heard of at least one guy who had his engine check light come on after fitting it but it seems he may have plugged it in the wrong way round.

I can't comment whether it's within your capabilities but if you do get stuck, let me know and I'll come and give you a hand.

Second thoughts....

If you really want to make your current car feel faster, why don't we swap cars for a while? I reckon a couple of weeks in my W124 trailing a pleasant plume of veg oil would make you appreciate your SL again?

Top idea me thinks, let me know.... :D
