heater motor brushes are also a common problem on Sprinters however when the brushes go the symptoms are usually that the heater will work fine one day and then won't work at all the next day.

Replacement brushes are available on ebay.

Hi, I think I will remove my carbon brushes and check this first. Can you advise the best way to go about it and roughley were I need to look first to remove mine on a 1997 308D sprinter. I can see the fan is on the bulkhead under the bonnet at the passenger side but are the brushes accesible without a full removal of the fan & housing?

I am quite capable with a bit of expert guidance and have to get it done asap, now the frost has started.

Regards

No, you need the blower out to check the brushes.

Remove the blower. You'll see 2 small black rubber stoppers on the sides, these hold the 2 parts of the blower together. Press these in with a blunt knife or screw driver then pull the 2 bits apart. You'll then see 2 small stainless clips. Behind each of these is a spring and a brush. Watch out as when you take the clip off the spring will ping out - CATCH IT!. Take the spring out and then pull the brush out. You'll then need to unpick the old solder and then solder in the new brush. Refitting is the reverse of the above.

If you don't have a soldering iron there's a way you can fit these without soldering but it means cutting the new brushes down a bit.

These are the ones you should need. Check the size of your brushes and make sure they're 9mm x 8mm (cross section) obviously the length of yours will be different from these as yours are worn down. Normally, when the brushes wear down to about 10mm in length they start palying up and need replacing.
