sprinter loss of power or limp mode

been watching these forums for a few days and looking at the problem of loss of power.
a few tips were some different sensors including the MAF, faulty turbo etc.

I stupidly washed the engine ( to find an oil leak) while t5he van was running doh!
at first i thought filter air then fuel.
cleaned both then started looking at the forum.

Eventually i gave up and thought of some crazy idea which was grab my tin of switch cleaner |(not for cars but for my mixer i use at the gigs)
i sprayed the whole tin over every socket, wire, in fact all over it.

I started the van, ran round our scheme and amazingly its running like new and as it should.
I am over the moon now.
Anyway so for those of you who've tried everything including the WD40 then you may as well try this for the price of about £4 a can.

Lemme know if it works for anyone

hello all
brand new to the site, just having a quick read.i'm in for 1 and a half bottles of shiraz so please excuse any irrelivance but,my beloved 312 was a powerfull 90-100mph all day merc with 318k on,till it got ran out off juice twice in a year, then this changed, engine sounded lovely, had some smoke,i cleaned out the egr valve, things improved, but it was getting harder to start more and more turns until the day it did'nt start.long story short broke it up on ebay ( stiill got some bits left for my next one) but the guy that bought the fuel pump said, and i quote "its worse than the one that was on mine!!".
GUTTED! scrapped my beloved 5 year, well service work horse for not trying something obvious.
it was difficult to start, lacking in power (empty it used to overtake like a car)and bad on hills, edc and abs lights were on and off for a year (wiring over bulkhead),edc eventually staying on.
i wish i'd seen DEVA'S thread 9 months ago.
i'm sure the fuel pump was a fault but, looking back there was more than one problem.
also had a fiat marea jtd 1.9 with black smoke and no power, air intake pipe before the air flow meter was split, put some windscreen bond in it,wow back to normal, again check all the pipes even if it seems mundain.
sorry for going on
all the best
warwick
p.s. still looking for a 312 ,need convincing about the 311's,driven one it was gutless, drove another 310 yesterday, that was lacking aswell. which way to go?? re map

Sprinter/2006/2.7
Hello all
New to this forum but have read many interesting and helpful bits.
So, hoping someone can help me with a problem thats cropped up with my Sprinter 310d, its a 1998 model 5cyl 2.9 turbo and covered 216000 miles. Its been running fine until last week, when pushed over 60mph it loses power, almost as if gone into limp home mode, seems like the turbo isn't working proper and top speed is a maximum of 80mph and very slow to get to, its also losing speed on hills which it would normally accellerate up!
If i restart the engine all the power comes back and turbo whistles and does its job, i have noticed that it kicks out some exhaust smoke to start with when i do this.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
Look forward to your replies.

i did have almost same problem, check how i did fixed.

310D box van. S reg.
Hi,

I bought a 310D S reg van and had a similar problem. At about 50mph there was a sudden decrease in power/pull.

After a lot of fault finding I finally discovered the the turbo pipe had a small split in it. This would explain the sound the engine was making (air rushing) in place of the extra power.

Because all the autofactors were closed on Saturday I took to the hardware store and taped up the pipe with electrical tape followed by gaffer tape.

I took it out for a spin straight after and WOOSH, the power I knew was missing was there.

Thanks for all the advice.

Would not be fuel filter if a restart temporarily cures it. More likely a MAF or MAP sensor fault.
