Hi there all,

I'm in need of some, well a lot of help. Here goes,,,,,

Tomorrow my job is to try and rescue a friends sprinter 311 cdi. They changed the head gasket at the weekend and now the engine may be 180 degrees out as it is obviously not starting and the ECU light is on. (crank was repeatedly turned when in bits) the engine was rebuilt aligning the timing marks with no further tech data.

however the ECU light may be on due to an attempt at bump starting it with a tow rope from another vehicle whilest it was hydraulicing due to the head gasket's failure. The owner however is aware that there may be an issue with bump starting these vehicles as far as a surge in voltage being transmitted through to the ECU during this and took the precaution of turning on the lights and fan to drain power. So my thoughts are the ECU light may be on due to the timing being out?

I have had a brief look for technical data pertaining to the timing etc and cannot find a site with manuals so I seek your help as this sprinter is ment to be travelling across europe next week to a world championship with its owners and desperatly needs fixed quickly.

Can anybody help? I will need the setup details for the timing and how to clear the ECU light. I also need a diagram of the front belt routing as they have also forgotten how it went. I believe there is a common rail when I asked if it was injecting so I presume the pump is not timed? will the engine start however if the timing was correct and the ECU warning light still on?

Also do the valves clear the pistons, i.e. can the cam pulley be disconnected in situe and the engine turned 360 degrees or do the cams need to be lifted?

A tall order I know, but reading through your forum I see there are a lot of knowlegable people here so I think I'm in good hands,,,,, HELP!
