Whilst doing some work on the front end of my van i have replaced both headlights, (insecure, burnt out wiring from a minor front end issue etc etc).

I have replaced them with the new style ones from 2003 onwards (mines a 2002) and would like to know a few things.

My original headlamps had the electric adjusters on them, the new ones don't, i thought they might be changeable but it appears whilst everything else fits the same the plastic stick (the the ball type end) is much longer on the electric type. Anyone know if they can be adjusted to change these over. Its no the end of the world. 99.99% of the time i'm loaded and dont need to adjust but if they're there its nice for them to work.

Secondly and more importantly (i think). the main beam lamps. On the original lamps it was a H1 for main beam and a H7 for dip. these new ones have the front fog lamps aswell (i'll put a separate switch in) but the main beam lamp holder is no h1 shaped. therefore the h1's dont go in (unless they're at a funny angle). Any ideas what lamps these are for and where i can get them from. my normal parts suppliers can't tell me.

Just buy the MB switch it's a double one and will fit straight in, you'll probably find all the wiring is there for them as well, as for the bulbs they should be as you said, I'm sure they are the same as the old ones, part no LLB 499.

i did think about buying the switch, probably what i'll do. Almost certain the wiring is in (as it is for alot of things).

The old headlamps main beam holder had a T shaped hole for the H1 to fit in. These new ones have a square hole. the positioning "lumps" on the H1 make things worse, currently the lamps go through the hole without trouble but when clipped into place they are at a rather sharp angle and are useless beam wise. It is still the same single wire connector as for the H1. I'm begining to wonder if there is not a part missing on the bulb holder.

My van has the factory front fogs (although I have fitted aftermarket lamps into the bumper step recess) and I am pretty sure the lights are controlled by a relay so you would need that and a home for it. If I can remember I will try to find out where it lives and get back to you.

Possible. On my eclass, the H7's mount on a small plate, its this that locks to the headlight. Bulb on own would just flap about and not mount. With mount, it's placed further in headlight, and bears out your point about lack of focus ? You need actual sight of another post 2003 headlight, or a friendly member to take their bulbs out and decribde what they have.
Or does teh detali(?) web site show vans and their components ?

My van is one of the first 2003 facelift with the clear lamp lenses. It has hight adjusters as standard and I have recently replaced a bulb which wasa straight swap with no obvious adapters (unless it stays clipped into the holder?). I'll just pop out with my camera and get back to you.

I think I have found your problem. The bulbs in mine seem to be H3's for main beam. I didn't notice when I had them out but while editing the pic's I spotted H3 stamped on the holder and if you look at the pic of the bulb insitu you can just make out a feint H3 in the bottom left of the bulb base when magnified.

Hope this sorts you out.
