A couple of months back i replaced the alternator pulley (that clutch type effort on the front) as it was knocking on tickover. New belt at the same time of course and (unrelated) a new fan viscous. Everything was great.

HOWEVER. When i start the engine up now, it starts lovely. then 3 or 4 seconds later this knocking appears for a few seconds and then disappears, the engine runs fine after that. This is from cold or hot. I've also noticed that the lights appear to get brighter when the knocking stops (be it interior light, headlamps, etc) as if it is the alternator not charging very well when its knocking. Could there be a problem with this clutch pulley and if so would this be a part that merc should replace as faulty, its only been on 2months / 4000 miles.

or could the knocking be from something else, oil related, is it taking a while to get around the engine?

Pop the belt off (you should be good at this having done it so recently) start her up for a short while and see if the knocking is still there. If it has gone you have an idea of where to start looking, if it is still there then who knows ?

new parts carry a warranty too.
have a word with your parts dept. 2months / 4000 miles is very disappointing.

I've just had a thought, if it is that part, i might be a bit stuck. Last time i got someone i knew who works at Merc to take the alternator with him and replace the part (which i had purchased over the counter already). It would be tricky to do that again.

i'll get the belt off and have a listen. its not a massive job. After lugging 13 tonnes of Line Array (large speaker systems) up a flight of stairs this morning anything is an easy job. And no i didn't transport them in my van, although looking at some of the sprinters i see going past you'd think they did have 13 tonnes in them.

if your pulley is attached the same way as on my cdi engines, you can fit it yourself. you'll need the splined tool £20 ish from merc.
you can borrow mine if you like... my bro lives not far from you in newark.

you say.."...although looking at some of the sprinters i see going past .."

that's about right, they only seem to have 2 speeds...stood at the lights and warp factor 9 !!:D
