My 53 reg 311 CDI has suddenly decided that it didnt want to start in the cold this morning. Eventually managed to get it started after about 20 mins and started/ran fine for the rest of the day. I have recently had new fuel lines, new fuel filter, new injector pump fitted by Pentagon MB. I am pretty sure that the pre heat is working as had a meter on the battery and the voltage dropped when I turned the key to the pre heat position. Does eny one have any suggestions as to what the problem might be, and also how the pre heat system works on the cdi engine?

Any help greatly appriciated.

Cheers
Rob

Get a leak off test done on your injectors. I had exactly the same problem and 1 injector was leaking off. Total cost for diagnosis, injector repair and labour was £180 +vat (just the other week) at a fuel injection specialist. BTW this is my 2nd injector repaired, the first one was causing a hot start problem (last year). Specialist said sprinters are bad for this fault, especially year 02-03.

To test the glow plugs remove the caps. Take a long screwdriver and touch it on the top of the glow plug. Take a jump lead from positive and touch it off the long screwdriver. If it sparks the glow plug is ok.

To test the circuit take off a cap, put a multi-meter between the wire and earth, and turn ignition on (with van cold). If you have power the circuit's ok.
