sprinter 312D edc light come on and engine stopped

Hello everyone,i was driving along and the edc light come on and the engine stopped and will not restart,can any one help?

have you checked all the obvious problems, fuel, induction pipes turbo etc?

There is a good fuel supply in/out of the filter & to the pump & everything else is connected where it should be,but 70/80 miles before it happened i was stopped in the services with the engine ideling & there was a small rattling noise coming from the bellhousing area,which stopped when i put the clutch in do you think that has any thing to do with it?
