That's a strange one, they do use the same gear box as the cars, could you put up the first 6 numbers of the VIN.

hi malcolm,
no's are 903412, lever seems to centralise on 'n' but if you hold it it will go into 'd' but jump back if released, now will not go into 'r'
cheers

I can confirm that the Sprinter auto option is indeed a car gearbox, the W5A-380. A 5 speed auto capable of handling upto 380 Nm of torque (or it is in the CDI Sprinters).

Here's an interesting but irrelevant link to some info about the Merc Auto boxes http://www.kleemann.dk/site/Main/faq (scroll down to the bit about gearboxes)but this doesn't really help you with your problem which I would suspect is a selector fault rather than a gearbox fault (hopefully). Maybe some one has had similar problems with the same box in a car and can offer some advice?

hi malcolm, thanks for looking, i have traced the fault to that ball joint, it was rusted solid! i appreciate the vehicle doesn't get all that much use but would not have expected that. after freeing off and cleaning up, it is now working better than when it was purchased a year ago. again thanks to all for the help and advice.

Thanks for posting back, Re the Citreon, I had 8 CX estates from the early C matic through to the last CFi's, all time great cars.

Rust blimey. Just mild rust, or was water getting in somewhere?

Parrot, this sits underneath the van with no boot or protection and is placed with the open part of the ball upwards so that it can fill with water.
