Sprinter Brake travel

HI;

I have recently purchased a 2003 Sprinter 313CDI Van conversion.
Everything is fine except, the great brake travel, it has original pads and dics as its only done 18K since new.
I have had new brake fluid change and the problem is still there.

It brakes very well, no problem and the peddle does not bottom out, but the travel is 6-8 inches before braking takes effect.
I have taken it to two garages and S & B commercial Mercedes main service centre, engineers say thats just how they are, some better than others, they call it different,!.

Does any body in the forum suffer with Sprinter long travel brake peddle?

I just hope I am not alone on this, as it does worry me.

Thanks

All I can tell you is that my brother's Sprinter has long travel. First time I drove it I thought there was something amiss with it but apparantly not.

Your Mercedes
sprinter
they all have a longish travel,it is just how they are, its due apparently to the servo been so large??? it causes it to travel a fair old way, best thing is to just brake"jab" the pedal slightly when slowing down.let your foot of then re brake this gives it a lot better feel, not that good tho if you need to brake quickly mind, it is just one of the sprinter faults, some one once moded there pedal to give it a better feel but no increse or better braking was achived, daz

on my 312 with 300k i had excessive brake travel which passed the brake test on mot but the tester wasnt happy with the amount of travel. nor was i as it seemed too close to floor. i had changed fluid, new disks and pads. checked brake compensator valve etc etc.
i removed the 2 nuts holding master cylinder to bulkhead and pulled it out with pipes still connected. behind here there is a splined nut which i turned outwards a quarter turn. brake pedal is now exactly where it should be.
caution, i tried turning it another half turn to be smart but the brakes bound solid when warm so be warned dont over do it.
i had already ruled out flexing hoses or dodgy master cylinder by clamping hoses near wheels and pressing pedal hard with no sink or spongieness.
check wheel temps after doing it to make sure nothing is binding after a short drive around the block.
hope this helps you all.

I would like to thank those members who contributed to my understanding of the Sprinter brake travel situation.

As mentioned due to the time lapse with such long travel, it must effect safety in some respect reactions Vs stopping, but I'll get used to it.

Thanks again
