sprinter engine numbers

Hi.Can any one tell me where to find the engine number on 2.9lt sprinter?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I have had this problem with my 2.7ltr straight 5cyl CDI sprinter. I couldn't find the engine number (and believe me I tried) I asked my merc dealer service desk and their reply was-

ENGINE NUMBER IS ABOVE THE STARTER MOTOR ON THE BELL HOUSING.

This didn't make sense to me as I know the bell housing is one piece with the gearbox so I assumed they meant by the bellhousing where the starter motor fits?

It appears that finding the engine number is virtually impossible with the engine in the vehicle. This is dissapointing as how are you supposed to check a vehicles identity when buying secondhand?

on your V5, beside the words 'ENGINE NUMBER'.

the engine number on my 5 cylinder 312 is below the first injector (nearest the front) on a small rusted plate on the engine block
