My 2002 308 cdi gives 25-35 mpg depending on the load and how you are driving. About 30 in general conditions.

all my sprinters do 400 miles minimum, 500 miles maximum on a tank. 310, 312, 313, 316
seems to depend more on speed travelling than load. by the way mines mostly motorway miles. travel at 55 you will get home late!

I've got a heavy right foot and rarely see much less than 400 from a tank full from my 310.
Going Manchester way on Friday and expect to get there and back on a tank. With trailer in tow.

LWB 311. Most of my miles are motorway ones and i'm usually between 65 and 70 and the day my van sees anything over 3000rpm i've converted it to an ambulance and i see about 26mpg. its important to note its FULL+10% but even so sometimes i wonder if its a little low for my driving style.

hi people, ive just bought a sprinter, 208d 97 swb model low top
it seems im putting fuel in it and its going nowhere
i only use it for personal use and its always empty
im getting 80 miles for £20
im trying to use low revs in an effort to lower consumption but it just aint working
there is no dodgy blue or even black smoke coming out of it
whats going on?????????
i was looking on ebay and i saw this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....Track=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:middle:uk
is it a good move or not?
do i have an underlying problem with it which needs to be sorted or am i just being optimistic about the mpg
any info would be very much appreciated
thanx carl

People are often tricked into thinking, aaah the smaller engine in the van must mean better fuel economy, whilst this may work to a point its not always so.

You are having to push the van harder to maintain a certain speed or acceleration level, you may have a lower ratio gearbox meaning higher revs at the same cruising speed as for example the 210 or 212.

This is under 20mpg is it not which i must admit DOES seem low, however on paper i'm sure i remember seeing that the *08 in both the non cdi and cdi models were significantly worse on fuel than the other models. I may have been dreaming though.

quick, edit: your link is for the CDI model sprinters aswell. which wont be correct for you model.

yeah after posting that link i got a reply from the guy about it not being for my model
mine is not the cdi
i know what your saying about the engine size too, more energy needed to pull the van and a 2.3 maybe a little too small
have mercedes just made a less than adequate choice in engines then
my tranny does about 70 miles to a tenner
its a 1992 2.5d, lwb semi high, im wondering why i bothered to change vans
hehe
well i might just send the sprinter in for a diesel timing adj, see if that makes any difference, if not ill probably sell it on and go back to the tranny, or even go for a car
i only use it for transporting motorbikes, and ive got a bike trailer, and a tow bar on my car
a juice guzzling van is hardly worth having

Well its something you have to look at practically and only you can decide whats best with that :)

the Merc 2.3 engine outputs about 10bhp more than the 2.5d transit IIRC. Its not too bad for a non turbo engine. I don't think it was a poor choice, just a lower powered choice equal and greater than alot of other vans on the market at the time. LDV anyone?

As for 2.3 being too small, its not necessarily about engine size its what you do with them and what they are driving, All but the highest CDi models on the sprinters (not the newest ones) are 2.2 litre engines with the largest of these outputting 130bhp, 10bhp more than the older 2.9! engine. Technology has moved on a fair bit since that 2.3 engine was designed in 19**.

yeah, it may produce 10bhp more but it feels like 20bhp less, as i said above, i have a 92 transit 2.5d which has twice the pulling power and its a lwb sh
theres definately something up with this sprinter, surely it shouldnt be this slow and this low on power, im gonna have a look at the diesel pump timing

yeah thats what i was told, but then i bought a sprinter, and found different, im getting mixed messages from people on here too
ive had a few transits as well as other vans
this is my first sprinter, and it aint filled me with the same confidence you have
im considering getting rid and going back to an old, and much more powerful 2.5d transit lwb
this sprinter has no power, it couldnt pull a tent peg out of the ground
i used it today to collect a motorbike, driving up there with an empty load
65-70mph all the way, with nothing left (motorway), on the way back i was lucky to break 60mph, except on a nice downhill stretch
poor economy, poor performance

I think it is clear there is a problem with your van somewhere then, fair enough they are not the most powerful vans on the road but they really should still having more power than the 2.5D lump of the transit. Ok its not going to pull like a new 318 but even so.

hi fz911,

i don't know about the 2.3 but ihave a '98 312 and it pulls and goes well and returns fair fuel consumption.

have just bought another motorhome on 416 chassis and it does seem like a drag racer:D albeit a 7.5m/4500kg one:cool: :-D fuel consumpion does seem to suffer though:rolleyes:
