Hi all,
before any of you start, I can spell, and it is not an error!
It occurs to me that no matter how much experience you have there are some things that still come as a surprise.
The old Sprinter was kind of down in power and had got very noisy at low revs accompanied by a rattly whistle from the engine taking off, and a huge whoosh at higher revs going through the gears.
There was also excessive vibration.
Finally diagnosed it as a seized viscous coupling and decided to replace it complete with belt and vibration damper because I reckon that had taken a pasting due to the fan being driven at far too high a speed.
When I took the central locating bolt off the water pump pulley the ****** thing came off in my hand showering small ball bearings from the rear bearing housing all over the place!
Another few miles and it would have danced through the radiator; viscious indeed!!
I really couldn't believe the difference in the overall engine performance just by renewing these parts; it drives like new and is so quiet.
Let me suggest if you detect the slightest wear in any of these components, renew them; you'll be delighted at the result.
But it just goes to show what an important function the fan coupling plays.
