White smoke may be unburnt diesel, oil will give a bluey tinge but it's often difficult to tell.

Is it definately oil from the exhaust? I've seen "oil" from an exhaust which was actually water with a high carbon content.

Place your hand close to the exhuast pipe so that you can get some one your palm. Give it a good rub. If it's oil you wont see any particles in it, or at least the base colour will be even.

Get the head compression tested.

Smoke colours explained (from a website)...

Black smoke
This is due to a air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean air (oxygen ) a few things to look for :

Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles)
Faulty injector pump
Dirty air cleaner
Turbocharger or intercooler faulty
Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit)

White smoke
Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.

Engine/pump timing out
Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly
Low engine compression
Water/petrol in the fuel

Blue smoke
The engine is burning engine oil

Worn cylinders or piston rings
Faulty valves or valve stem seals
Engine over full with engine oil
Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel

As one of the symptoms of white smoke is fuel starvation it would be worthwhile to check the inline filter as described here by Dava...

There's an inline fuel filter on the chassis pass side about just back of the pass seat, no one ever changes them, try that first.

When do you notice the white smoke mostly? If it is worse when you are on overrun you may have worn rings / bores which will drag oil into your cylinders on overrun

Check the auto advance on the back of the pump, they seize and will not advance correctly causing ignition at the wrong time, hence white smoke, was quite a common problem. Also the vac pipes that run to it, they split and loose vaccum so it cant pull the advance back, if I remember correctly they rubbed through on the inlet manifold, as it went across the top of the bulk head, also have a look at the wiring harness when your there, as this also rubbed through, wont cause this problem but others another day.
Hope it helps.
PS
If it is seized and I bet it is, free it off with WD.

Had the same problem on my 312d resulting in a non mercedes filter not having a non return valve built in, cost me £250 for merc to find the problem for a fuel filter less than a tenner.
