Hi All,
I'm getting this really annoying squeaking sound from, I think, the near side rear wheel on my W220 (2000 X)

The other half noticed it yesterday as I backed out of the car port. (She was outside the car waiting to get in.)

So I drove back and forth on the drive way, with the window down, and I could hear the squeaking or rubbing sound.

Went for a very short drive thinking it might be break dust or something!! but it didn't go away.

Went home and took the near side rear wheel off (the bolts were really tight and the threads looked really dry and rusted).

With the wheel off I couldn't see anything odd (not that I know what I'm looking for) so just sprayed a bit of WD40 into the bolt holes and sprayed some on the bolt treads too.

Put wheel back on but noise is still there (might be a bit less, but difficult to tell)

Took the car out again briefly today but this time I raised the car using the airmatic system. This seemed to stop the sound, although I think it might have still been there, just to a lesser extent.

So basically, raising the car seemed to help as it almost eliminated the sound.

Anyone come across this, and any pointers?

I think it's a visit to the Stealer, and it's gonna cost me big time!!! Only had the car a week!!!

If anyone has got any ideas as to what it might be, please do let me know so I'm prepared for the worst.

Much appreciated,

shr.

Could be rear wheel bearing, when you jacked the car up did you turn the wheel and check for movement/notchiness?

No because the parking brake was on.
Manual says parking break should be on at all times.
Is it ok to jack the car up without the parking break on?

Make sure you chock the other wheels. You don't want it falling off the jack.

So a house brick either side of the other three wheels?

If your jacking the back wheels up you should chock the front wheels regardless of whether you have the parking brake on or not. The parking brake and 'P' only work on the rear wheels. To Test for the rear wheel bearing you need to have the car in 'N' and the parking brake off. Just ensure that your on flat gound and that the other 3 wheels are chocked as per above.
I would also be wary of the WD40 cure all, as your parking brake may not work so well if your spraying WD40 on it.

Thanks Blobcat.
As the car is new (to me) I'm still a bit reluctant to do anything with it (Dealership's eyes light up if I say that to them)

The car is so heavy, I'm reluctant to leave the parking break off and stick the selector to neutral.
When i lowered the car and removed the jack, there was a partial imprint in the ground where the base of the jack was digging in.
Makes my CLK (sold last week) seem like a push bike in comparison!!!

I'll take to stealer tomorrow morning. What I'm hoping for is that they tell me what's wrong and then I go to my local indy to do the work.
The stealer are still making money on the parts, as my indy will buy the parts from the stealer. Indy labour charges are 50 quid per hour versus the stealership's 100.
