Yesterday I drow about 500 km on my W124 E 280 1996.
Just before arrival where I was going a loud squeak could be heard exp. when driving slowly and didnt stop until the car was stopped. When I was trying to find out where it came from with car not moving but the engine running it could be heard when turning steering wheel to or from left to neutral but from neutral to right and back to nautral there was no squeak ! Some guy at my hotel guessed it had worn out steering absorber or damper. Does anybody imagine what is going on

Regards
Jóhannes

I've had the same problem intermittently. Like Jules said it's the shroud around the steering column so nothing to worry about.

This is surely not from inside. It comes from outside and is loud scartchy sound like when rubber or plastic is rubbed to glass or something.
Thanks any why........ im going to call MB workshop and ask for advice.
