Squeaky ball joints

Hi all,

I have a squeaky front suspension and the dealer thinks it's the ball joint. They suggest having the 'controller' replaced rather than the individual ball joint because it comes as one. I presume they mean the arm.

My car is out of warranty and the quote I was original given is 2hr labour (£200) + part (£500). For some odd reason, the dealer is happy to absorb the cost of the part out of their own volition as they're given a 'budget'. Do you guys think it's worth doing? I've read that lubing them would cost just £20.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Go to an Indy it will cost a lot less I had both arms done for £280

Any good indy wil have a puller and press to replace the offennding rubber only.

Lubing wont do anything is the rubber is split, Lubing would cost much less of your prepared to get on your knees and DIY

In my experience a "squeaky" ball joint is worn, lubricating it will silence it but it will need replaced. £500 for the part and 2 hours to replace is beyond exorbitant. Find an independent MB specialist, give your location and someone on here will recommend one.

The dealer is willing to pay for the part and charge 2hrs of labour for £200 all up. Do you think it'll take 2hrs to replace both joints though?

If he's replacing both arms and doing the suspension and steering alignment he'll still have time for a cup of tea. If you are only being charged for the labour then it looks OK for replacement of manufacturer OEM parts.

BTW, are they MB OEM arms? I was just told that MB arms cost around £200 each.

Find an independent get a quote and remember at least the wheel alignment will need to be checked afterwards.

Was £280 labour only? I was quoted around £600 for just a single genuine control arm.

Yes. Genuine is around £600 and aftermarket is around £400.
