Squealing Heater Fan

Hi

Was driving up the motorway in very cold temperatures (-4 Cent) and started getting an intermittent high pitched sqeeling noise that would come and go almost at random. The noise was most pronounced coming from the centre dash cold air vents. Seemed to happen at all fan speeds but most audible at lower speeds.

The car is a 1993 190 1.8 (112k miles) with the slider fan speed control.

Is it just a dry bearing or a freaky incidence because of the cold weather. (the wipers iced solid)?

Is there something I can lube, or is it a new motor job?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

same thing happened on my 190, finally it got louder and louder like a helicopter and then dead. in the end i removed the old heater and found the cause of the problem, the wires attached to the old bushes came loose and were rubbing against it, the old motor was beyond repair so i replaced it with a genuine mb part.

here's a photo of the old heater motor with loose wires...

not the hardest job in the world, but you do have to

* remove the windscreen wiper (be careful while doing so, slide it down and out or you may crack your windscreen, i did...)
* remove the leaf catcher plastic (the thing sitting in the back seat of my car in this photo - http://anyweb.kicks-ass.net/personal/me/mycar/updates/june--2004 068.html)
* remove the black plastic shroud that covers the heater motor behind the engine heat shield, this was the hardest part as the black plastic shroud looks too big to get out, but after much turning here and there i finally squeezed it out of the way
* remove the motor assembly

then slap in the new motor and redo all the above in the opposite order,

here's a photo of the new motor, notice the difference ?

you could be lucky, and it might only be ice that has caught against the blades, but i doubt it

Do as anyweb says, the fan unit has to come out.
If no wires are rubbing it will be the bearings dry,the one nearest the brushes are the biggest culprits . From new these bearigs are heated and dipped in oil. put a few drops of oil into the bearing leave for an hour and repeat.

I cured this problem by putting high melting point moly grease in by the bearings without removing the fan. This cure lasted for ages but the squeak returned anout 2 weeks ago. I have to lubricate it again.

Thanks for the replies.

As for removing the wiper, I was checking out the Haynes for this but it wasn't too clear. I had a look and can't see an obvious way to remove the base plate from the wiper. It appears to be just a mass of metal!!

I had been wanting to take it off to lubricate the reciprocal mechanism inside after reading in car mechanics that it cost a fortune to replace if it wore out!!

Cheers

The links Blobcat is referring to are for the later wiper unit fitted to the W202 & W210 chassis cars. This link should look more like your car's wiper drivehead;http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=66429; a long thread but the information is there.
If you remove the wiper arm from the drivehead, first place a pad on the windscreen under the arm or the bottom part of the arm may click down and crack the screen.

as i recall removing the wiper assembly on my 190, there were approx 4 or 5 solid bolts underneath it which held it in place, you have to loosen all of them and then you'll see that the assembly (all in one) will slide out

you cannot see the bolts holding it in place properly until youve removed the leaf catcher (held in with some screws)

cheers

squeeling blower?

Hi Alan,

has the car got air con, as you sometimes get an odd high pitched (intermittant) noise from heating vents when the air con needs gas filling.
just a thought!

cheers.
