Squealing noise

Hi all.

I have a '97 C200 auto. Occasionally, I can hear a squealing noise when turning, I'm presuming it's the power steering belt that may need adjusting.

Is this easy to do?

I've read a couple of other threads where it has been advised to check the fluid level, is this appropriate to my problem as well?

Your power steering runs off the ancillary drive belt which also runs the alternator and water pump ,along with aircon if you have it. As it is automatically tensioned it is unlikely to be the cause of your squealing unless the belt is badly worn.
Check the level in the power steering reservoir ,at the nearside front of the engine, http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as....418&VIN=*&CT=M&cat=19K&SID=01&SGR=005&SGN=01
;No13 in this diag.; as if this is low it may be the cause,if so you need to find if you have a leak or the problem will just recur and may damage the steering box.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

It hasn't happened since yesterday now, and considering we had a major monsoon here all day yesterday, and I was driving in it, could it be that the belt just got wet and was slipping?

I only mention it because when I tried to replicate the sound to try and work out what it was, nothing happened, and the car had been stood still in an underground car park for 2 hours.

I have a mitsubishi L200 which produced a similar intermittant squeal. I swapped the belt, OK for a while, then it returned. I took it to the local indie who does my MB. Same thing. He traced it to us using belts from the local factor, when he put on a mitsubishi belt, the problem appeared solved.
Time will tell!
