Hi all,

My 300TD W124.... the blower fan is squeeking/screeching intermittently.

I have seen some threads on how to get access from the engine bay side but I want to be prepared and have the job done in one go.

Is this squeeking caused by

- the fans themselves rotating... i.e. I need to lubricate them?
- bearings?
- bushes?
- the motor somehow????

Just want to know what I need to buy in advance.

Thanks!

Does your car have a/c, if so I have a spare fan that you are welcome to...

The blower motor uses a pair of sintered bronze self lubricating plain bearings they go dry and require lubrication or a replacement motor.

Its on the engine side of the bulkhead behind the wiper motor under all that plastic paneling.

You do not have to replace the motor, once out lubricate the bearings and it should be fine, better done with them warmed up, but not practical

ok so how do I lubricate them?

My wife needs the car so i simply don't want to take it apart on a Sat afternoon only to find I need a special type of lubricant and can't get it.... or can#t get the bearings out.

Any more detailed info?

Yours cluelessly....

Engine oil is OK for this, I use a thin screwdriver dipped in the oil and just touch it on the bearings or motor shaft

Hi,

I did this job at the weekend using the following instructions:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W124BlowerMotor

It was all relativley easy.

- The wiper arm was quite tight on the shaft. I had to use a thick headed screwdriver and hammer to knock it off.
- Alot of my trim was in bad shape, damaged clips, a few screws missing etc etc
- I had only one fan cage on the motor and I wasn't sure where the bearing was so I put spray grease in lots of places, too much really as it now kind of smells of grease with the fan on but I'm sure it'll wear off
- The motor had a large curved plastic cowl over it. It was attached to the bottom of the windscreen area but I could'nt get then off. It was like two allen headed bolts that threaded into rubber nuts. I couldn't get access to the allen heads as they were on the bulkhead side. Luckily i could bend the plastic cowl out of the way to get the lube in
- Took me ages to get the wiper arm bakc onto the shaft. It helps if you click the arm into it's outward position.

Took me about 2 hours including faffing around but well worth it!

ok the damn thing started to squeek again! slightly but surely it will get worse.

I think I need to take the motor out, or at a minimum remove that plastic cowl out of the way.

Does anybody know how to get that cowl out????

On the bulk head side was a round head, with what seemed to be an allen head in it, but I couldn't get access to get an allen key in.

Out the engine bay side was a rubber hexagonal "nut". If it's rubber how can I turn it? It just bends????

The only way I can think is to cut this cowl, and then glue it back together somehow.
It can't be that hard.
