I've just bought a fantastic 230CE (automatic), though as always there is a little problem. The car keeps stalling at low speeds or junctions which is proving to be a real danger. Merc have said they cannot find the problem after driving it for 2 hours (sods law), so they can't recommend on how to fix the probelm. Anyone out there with a similar problem and solution?

Need Help!!

Does it just need the Idle screw turning a bit or is it intermittent?
If its fairly stable except with the engine under load ie, lights on, steering pump working due to parking maneuvers, heater blower etc, just adjust it.

Thanks 'reg4u2c', I'll check out the idle screw.

I've changed the OVR and so far touch wood no problems. Though I'll give it another 500 mils before I hit a motorway / dual carriageway.

If you look at the bottom of the air filter pan on the RHS , just where it overlaps the top of the engine , you will see an indentation in the bottom of it halfway along . Crouch down low looking over the right hand wing and look under the filter at this point and you will see a large screw - that's it ! Unscrewing it (anticlockwise) will increase the idle speed .

While we are about it , the mixture adjustment on these cars is via a small hole in the top centre of the air filter - often you will find a rubber grommet that will have to come out then a long allen key needs to be inserted to engage the socket head screw below . Don't press down while adjusting or you will stall the engine . You can use various diy methods to get the correct mixture - the colour of the exhaust will usually indicate rich running as will the spark plugs ; it is a matter of trial and error. You can weaken the mixture until the idling becomes uneven then turn it back until it just idles evenly . If you have access to a CO meter this is the proper way to do it.

I've changed the Over Voltage Relay and so far the car hasn't stalled in 150 miles so I'm hoping I found and stoped the problem. Thanks for your comments.

For anyone else with a stalling car (124) the over voltage relay is the main cause, as MB admit, poor soldering. Though many can be soldered up again the PCB is often the worse for wear.. note that with the new ones supplied they often have more contacts than the original, owing to different specs of the cars, so only the one fit all.

Hi all, just been reading this and seems to match exactly what's happening with my 1995 220 CE. Most mornings (especially when cold) when turning in the drive the revs will drop and engine eventually stall. As soon as I'm on the road however its 100% fine.

Would you think I need to adjust the idle screw? What about the OVR, is this a complicated job?

Any help, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Les

Merc replaced my OVR for £100. I've now done 300 miles and haven't stalled. And I got the idle screw adjusted at my last service so touch wood it's all good. Now I need to find speaker replacements for the W124, the clip in type. It's ****** difficult to find on the net or in shops. Anyone got any ideas or some for sale?

Regards
