Merry festivities to all.

Hoping to get back to Mercedes in the New Year after a long break. Previously had a couple of W123's but these seem a little out of my budget these days, shame as the best cars I've had. Anyhoo I'm trying to persuade myself that a big barge is a 'good' idea.
To that end I'm looking at W220 320 CDI preferably as late as possible, or if being sensible a W211 estate, also 320 CDI. I'm mechanically competent enough, if possibly a little short of bodywork patience ;) So my question is how sensibly are these home mechaniced these days? Do I really need a STAR clone and laptop (more £££) or will a Carsoft suffice? What should I look for other than history, history, history and usual checks?

Thanks all.

Hello and welcome

W211facelift is a good start, well represented on the forum and well known

W215 is nice, but generally a lot more expensive to run, I looked at one but bought a 911 instead :D

Hah that says it all. A W140 CL (?) would be perfect but too much for a nice one. Love the 'I could pull the Berlin Wall if I wanted to' styling.

I think a C140 might feel quite 'elderly' in comparison to a facelifted W211 or a W220. Depends on what you expect or want from your car.

Elderly is fine, I’d love another W123, it’s quality of engineering and comfort I’m after. Ok my 123’s could huddle too lol.
