Anyone got suggestions for finding a way of preventing theft of the Star badge (at 17 quid a throw this is getting to be annoying to say the least) ?

I'm sure you can get a retractable one, I've seen it somewhere else. You wire it so that it retracts at the same time as your aerial.

Seriously, I've never had one nicked yet and I've been running them since 1998.
Anyway, I believe there are removable versions available, such as http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mercedes-star-removable-magnetic_W0QQitemZ110054255052QQihZ001QQcategoryZ10398QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

As jb says the removable one may be the way to go. I looked at these when I first got the Merc expecting the star to go missing within days. Luckily for me so far :D it has been untouched :D

You could - sort of. I posted a photo last summer where I'd actually see one installed on an 80's S class. It wouldn't fit into anything newer though.

MB Stars

Dear All,
AS a new member, this is my first post here and I hope this will not sound like sacrelige to the purists, but after loosing my second star to some low life, I filled resulting the hole in the badge - not the hole in the bonnet - with a rubber blank. This was previously laquered with a clear laquer and when dry, it was siliconed into place. When and if I sell the car, the badge will be replaced.

Incidentally a recent drive from Orpington to Scotland saw 43MPG on the trip guage, which translated to 41.5MPG between fills. As always, this was driving at the appropriate speed limits.

Otherwise there have been a number of the usual problems with the car, a 54 plate C200 Kompressor, some recurring, all of which have been corrected by my local dealership. However, I was surprised to learn that the outside temperature indicator is not considered faulty if it is withing 5 deg C of the correct temperature! Given that this item reads to 0.5 deg C, this seems to be hardly fit for purpose, particularly if used as a frost indicator, and I would be interested in the forum's opinion on this.

If anybody wants a list of the problems experienced with this car, I can let them have it.

Many thanks for this forum, it is extremely helpful with many excellent contributions, and I look forward to many more visits.

Regards,

Ernie

Hi & Welcome,
You could fit the flat badge from a CL/CLK/CLS/SL in its place, it would look a lot better. Next time your passing your MB dealer go to the parts department, MB charges are not bad for the badges.

I'm sure there will be one or two lying around in the showroom, ask if you can have one of them ;). The only issue is that it will most likely cost you a lot more as they may insist you pay for the attached parts to the ones in the showroom....:p
