Starter Motor 190E

The starter motor on my 190E finally packed-up on me today- great start to the new year!

A local indie garage who regularly services the old girl (no sniggering) had already quoted me £230 for fitting an exchange motor (Lucas) -parts & labour, but held back due to credit crunch, etc.

Any suggestions where I could get a replacement starter motor from and ball-park price? Also, any estimate of time it would take a garage mechanic to fit the part? ( Haynes manual allocates a x4 spanners 'difficult' ranking to the removal & refitting. Sounds fiddly having to access from underside of engine compartment, remove engine undershield,etc.etc.)

I need to give the duff starter motor a whack with a hammer to get the car started to drive off to a garage but, embarrassing to admit this, am having difficulty locating it. Could someone please help give me idiot-proof 'directions'?

A happy new year to all M-B members!

Which engine is fitted to your car? I have few to fit the 2.6 engines .They are from W124 series but they may well fit yours. Drop me an email with your details and I will see what I can do.

Thanks Smudge & Roofless for your leads, much appreciated.

Has anyone got any ideas how to start the car with a faulty starter motor - it's an auto so jump-starting isn't an option!?

Your Mercedes

in park with the ignition on you might start it by bridging the two nuts that hold the 12v cables on the solenoid but only if it's the solenoid on the starter thats faulty if it's the motor it's self your out of luck...just watch uot for moving parts
